- W826989846 abstract "VIDEO REVIEW: WOMEN'S VOICES AND WOMEN'S LIVES Women's Voices Women's Lives©, produced by Rosanna F. Demarco, PhD, APRN-BC, ACRN, Anne E. Norris, PhD, RN, CS, FAAN, and C. Abraham Minnich, MAVA (2004) (Teen Version: 25 minutes, $150 with an optional $75 research rebate; Women's Version: 20 minutes, $150; Provider Version: 25 minutes, $150), is a series of conversations with four African American women who are living with HIV. These women are members of the Healing Our Community Collective in Boston, MA. Based on traditions of the African American community, the intent of these educational videos is intergenerational transmission of information about HIV through personal stories and emotional connections. Each of the four women describes how she contracted HIV and the personal decisions that lead to her infection. The most emotional aspect of the films is when each woman describes how difficult HIV has made her life. The women's interwoven discussions of the medications, side effects, stigma from friends and family, poor health, fears, and guilt regarding children born with HIV are particularly poignant. Although three versions of the film are available, the teen version and women's version will be the focus of this review. Targeted toward African American girls, the teen version of Women's Voices Women's Lives is segmented into five individual clips and can be viewed in its entirety as a 25 minute film or separated into individual 5 minute stand alone clips. The teen version comes with a five lesson curriculum which includes activities, discussion questions, worksheets, and handouts. The video and curriculum are designed to be used in teen drop-in centers, classrooms, and primary care settings. An optional $75 research rebate is available with the teen version. The research rebate involves distributing a short, anonymous survey to teens (i.e., before and after viewing the film) and a survey to assess teen demographic characteristics and risk behaviors. Survey forms, procedures, and a summary of the teen responses are supplied with the research rebate. Rebate requirements are clearly described on the film brochure. TESTING POSITIVE Each of the four women presents a frank explanation of how she became infected with HIV, including getting drunk and sleeping with men who were HIV positive, using intravenous drugs, and having unprotected sex on the basis of erroneous beliefs such as it's not going to happen to me and I was a nice girl. Nice girls are not at risk sexually. Feeling devastated, numb, overwhelmed, shamed, scared, and suicidal are some of the initial reactions that the women had to their HIV positive diagnoses. The women also elaborate on how their poor choices and decisions along with impulsive and unsafe behaviors continue to affect their lives and the lives of their families. EVERYTHING CHANGES The theme of the clip, Everything Changes, is that HIV infection totally changes each woman's life so that she no longer feels like a normal person. One woman explains how her choices and subsequent HlV diagnosis led to her becoming homeless. Another woman relates that she was sure she had AIDS and was going to die; she felt damaged-like she would never be able to have another relationship again. One of the four women relays that she found out that she was HIV positive when she was pregnant, which caused her to focus on the baby rather than herself. She discusses her tremendous guilt when the baby was born HIV positive and died at the age of 6 months. Another woman describes the reactions of her friends and how she feels disappointed and hurt by their negative attitudes. She states, Its horrible .. .it hurts to know people are still cruel. STRUGGLING This clip focuses on the difficulties the four women face in following complex medication regimens and treatments, including physically swallowing numerous pills several times a day and relentless side effects such as chronic diarrhea. …" @default.
