- W8270909 abstract "The development of effective immunity depends on highly coordinated and complex interactions amongst organs, circulating and tissue-fixed cells, and molecular factors that are elicited in very specific patterns that differ with the species, and even type, of pathogen or immune stimuli that the host encounters. Early investigators of vitamin A (VA) recognized this nutrient as essential for the prevention of infectious disease; indeed, Green and Mellanby referred to VA as the “anti-infective agent” [1]. Research that has been reviewed previously showed requirements for VA for lymphoid organ and cell integrity, antigen-specific antibody responses, cell-mediated immunity, and innate immunity. Experimental studies conducted in a variety of in vivo and cell models demonstrated that retinoid depletion results in dysregulation of T lymphocyte functions, impaired antibody responses to T cell-regulated antigens, and reduced non-specific immune responses. Other studies demonstrated that retinoids can, in some circumstances, enhance immune responses. With previous reviews [2-7] as a point of departure, this chapter provides an update focused on recently gained knowledge of the roles of retinoids in lymphocyte activation, antibody production, and the production of cytokines, cytokine receptors and intracellular signalling molecules that are involved in immune and inflammatory responses." @default.
