- W82768970 abstract "The subtitle of this manuscript, which is a variation of an old popular song, sets the theme for this paper. Neurotransmitters have their effects on behavior by altering neuronal activity in a particular part of the brain, and the part of the brain in which this activity is altered may substantially influence the effect of the neurotransmitter on behavior. This interaction between neurochemistry and neuroanatomy is illustrated in the context of the basal forebrain cholinergic system (BFCS), which has projections to many different neuroanatomical areas (Bigl et al., 1982; Woolf et al., 1984; Butcher, this volume). For the present purpose, two subdivisions are important: the nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) and its projections to the frontal cortex (FC), and the medial septal area (MSA) and its projections to the hippocampus (HIP). Even though the neurobiological actions of the projections from the NBM and MSA may be similar, the psychological processes affected by these two systems may be different. Dissociations suggest that the NBM-FC system is more involved in attention than memory, whereas the MSA-HIP system is more involved in memory than in attention. This analysis suggests that any functional description of a neurotransmitter system should consider the interaction of both neurochemistry and neuroanatomy. From a functional perspective, it’s not just what these neurons do, it’s the place that they do it. Much of this material has been extensively reviewed elsewhere (Olton, 1990; Olton et al., 1991b,c; Olton and Wenk, 1987)." @default.
