- W82779979 abstract "Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) are porous carbons with a fiber shape and a well-defined porous structure that can be prepared with a high adsorption capacity. Although the ACFs are very promising materials, they still have not a market as important as that for the activated carbons due to their difference in production costs. The ACFs have important advantages compared with the conventional activated carbons due to their fiber shape with small diameters (typically of a micrometer scale), narrow poresize distribution, and easiness to be woven into different fabrics such as cloths, felts, and so on. Recently, similar materials with much smaller diameters [i.e. activated carbon nanofibers (ACNFs) in an nm scale)] have been developed, which constitute a new family of materials with very promising possibilities. Although the adsorption behavior of the ACF does not differ from other forms of microporous carbons, its fiber shape allows in getting better performance in some applications. For this reason, ACFs can be considered, in relation to the classical activated carbons, as a new and more powerful generation of microporous carbons. The microporosity and the micropore-size distribution of ACF and ACNF, responsible for most of their applications (i.e. VOC removal, gas separation, methane and hydrogen storage, as it also happens with other forms of activated carbons), can be well controlled, upon selection of the CF’s precursors, the type of activation, and the variables of the activation process. Thus, this chapter on ACFs will cover the most important aspects, concerning the preparation routes and the most important applications of these materials in areas such as pollutant removal and energy storage, (i.e. gas-phase methane and hydrogen storage and electrical energy storage)." @default.
