- W82789635 abstract "This article provides a review of the literature on the much neglected area of the consequences of population processes. Specifically described are those studies relating to the sociocultural and economic impact or population processes (migration and fertility) on the family, the political institution, and the church in the Philippines. Discussion of the family consequences focuses on the effects on health and nutrition, decision making, roles and status of women, husband and wife communication, values and norms, values of children, policies and programs. Institutional effects are discussed in terms of the urban poor, ethnic tribal groups and grass roots organizations. There is a substantial limitation and gap in the literature on the interrelationships among institutions and the dimensions of specific institutions. It is also pointed out there are methodological problems in specification, data collection, and analysis which have implications for policy intervention. There is a need in institutional analyses to include multilevels (individual, household, and aggregate). Assessing the impact of fertility and migration requires micro and macro level analysis. Methodology and data which are used in systematic studies of determinants are not as easily used in impact studies. There is inadequate identification of target populations, and a lack of comprehensive qualitative and quantitative description of the impact on these subgroups. Hence the failure and inadequacy of existing policies arises when there is emphasis on a homogenous population. An example of the paper's organization is as follows: the impact of fertility on the family as a whole (health and nutrition effect on parents) health effects on mother, labor force participation, and there relationship between husband and wife); and the effects on children (health effects, intellectual and mental growth, personality and social adjustment, income/poverty). The fertility impact on the political institutions is devoted to marital status, fertility and women's community/organization participation; and the effect of fertility/population increase on the political participation of peasants. The impact of fertility on the institutional church is reflected in the issuance of pastoral letters decrying the government's population policy but failing to influence attitudes. Fertility surveys found in 1978 that 48.6% of Catholic married women used contraceptives, and in 1967 that those approving of family planning were closer to the church." @default.
