- W82808631 abstract "Το be sure, it's ail a question of definition. What do we understand by and by rhetoric? We must give these terms strict enough connotations to be able to resolve the problem of their relationship, or even simply in order that there be a problem. I believe that in our day a consensus has been established in favor of defining in such a way that it is opposed to demonstration. Were this not the case, there wouldn't be any problem. For on the one side we would hâve demonstration of the logico-mathematical type, with no relationship to rhetoric, and on the other side a psychological manipulation no doubt related to but not at ail to argumentation. On the other hand, if we regard argumentation as a rational discourse aiming to convince, but without the formai figor of demonstration, then the problem of its relationship to does arise. What, then, does rhetoric mean? If I limit myself to our own times, this term seems to me to hâve at least four different senses. A first sense is that of certain theoreticians of literature, particularly those of Group Mu.1 For them is whatever is properly literary in a discourse, i.e., whatever constitutes a deviation.2 This holds particularly for figures of style. This definition has at least the merit of indicating the tie between and literature, but it is very narrow. In fact we are almost ne ver told in relation to what there is a deviation for example, what Cambronne was supposed to hâve said at Waterloo.3 And then just at the place where anyone claims to designate the norm, the true meaning, the degree zero, in short, the non-rhetorical, we always end up with a loss a loss of effect if not of meaning. Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra?4 If the orator, suppressing the apostrophe, had addressed his real audience, if he had said Catilina! How long will he abuse our patience?, the persuasive effect would hâve been less. And this leads to the final criticism:" @default.
