- W82871440 abstract "The hardening behavior and the effect of solution treatment and quenching conditions were studied for an Al alloy with 0.6% Mg, 0.8% Si, 0.39% Mn, 0.42% Fe, 0.12% Zn, and 0.04 u. An Al- Fe - Mn- Si phase was detected by etching methods, and the phase boundaries were determined. From the temperature- time relation of the hardness, the activation energy can be determined. The resistance isotherms, measured at temperatures from -80 to 350 un. Concent 85% C, permitted, in conjunction with the hardness measurements, a definite separation of the cold hardening from the thermal hardening to be made. The effect of the solution tempering conditions on the hardening was investigated extensively. Whereas the quench hardening decreases with increasing solution treatment temperature and time, the hardness maximum at 160 un. Concent 85% C increases with increasing quenching temperature. This was traced back to the effect of a higher vacancy concentration. With longer solution treatment times, a decrease in the maximum and quench hardening was detected; it was related to an increasing deformation of the Al- FeMn-Si phase. From the different hardening patterns in various quenching media, it could be established that the vacancies were affected not only by the precipitationmore » velocity but also by the distribution of the precipitation grains.
