- W829510672 abstract "Detailed analysis of faunal assemblages from archaeological sites in the eastern Aleutian Islands allows reconstruction of dietary preferences of prehistoric Aleut huntergatherers. These data demonstrate that, among both birds and mammals, larger and fattier species were preferentially exploited. In terms of the latter, the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubata) was particularly important as a source of food and was intensively exploited at nearly all times of the year. Although equally sedentary and present year-round, harbor seals and sea otters did not apparently suffer from the same degree of exploitation. Sea lions began to decline in late prehistoric times, perhaps in conjunction with regional human population growth and some increase in sociopolitical complexity. These patterns of sea mammal harvesting are revealed in both numbers and age distributions of animal remains in the faunal assemblages, and their consequences can be studied through life table analysis, a useful tool for archaeological interpretation." @default.
