- W82969665 abstract "The in vitro transformation of human lymphocytes can be induced by four different types of stimulants: first, the nonspecific mitogens, which include the plant lectins and certain microbial products; second, the specific antigens that stimulate lymphocytes from presensitized donors, third, allogeneic lymphocytes; and fourth, anti-immunoglobulin antibodies. This chapter describes the nonspecific mitogens and the specific antigens that stimulate lymphocytes from presensitized donors. The ability of the mammalian lymphocyte to respond to the extracts of several plants and to microbial metabolites by undergoing mitotic proliferation is a distinctive characteristic that reflects both the immunological status and the immune potential of the whole organism. Lymphocyte transformation is measured by the incorporation of radioactive thymidine into the DNA of dividing cells. The rate and amount of isotope incorporated, expressed as counts per minute (cpm), is a reflection of the strength of response and is directly related to the number of cells responding. The chapter discusses lymphocyte transformation in relation to the proliferative response as measured by the rate of incorporation of radioactive thymidine." @default.
