- W830582614 abstract "As documented by many clinical reports, it has long been recognized that slow growing lesions, i.e. lesions of “slow momentum” (Riese, 1948), cause less impairments and fewer symptoms than would be expected after similar brain damage that occurs more acutely (e.g., Finger, 1978; Jeannerod and Hecaen, 1979 for rewiews). In order to develop animal models of “lesion momentum” phenomena numerous studies have examined the effects of brain lesions produced in more than one stage, with interoperative intervals ranging from several days to several months (e.g., Finger and Stein, 1982 for a review). Substantial evidence from these experimental studies indicates that behavioral deficits following one-stage cerebral lesions are relatively attenuated or even abolished when virtually equivalent but temporally spaced lesions are produced. Such attenuations of behavioral symptoms due to multi-stage surgery have generally been termed “serial lesion phenomena” (Finger et al., 1973). The first part of this chapter outlines the various approaches utilized in this field and presents a brief summary of the major findings. Particular attention is given to some of the less frequently employed experimental methodologies and we report a study with temporally and structurally spaced lesions in which we included the use of colchicine to produce a “transient” lesion at the time of the first surgery." @default.
