- W830605017 abstract "The durability of concrete is greatly affected by the amount of water that it can absorb. Water allows re-bar corrosion to develop by acting as the electrolyte, and chloride ingress results primarily from direct transport of chloride ions into the concrete as solutions in water. Water also feeds any active expansion reactions that might be present, such as delayed ettringite formation or AAR. Organo-silicon compounds are able to impart hydrophobic characteristics to concrete surfaces by reaction with the surface to provide a chemically bonded hydrocarbon group which alters the surface energy to prevent water wetting and capillary action. A wide range of such compounds are commercially available, differing in molecular size, concentration and in the chemical nature of the reactive groups. Impregnation of concrete structures or elements with organo-silicon compounds is carried out to render the concrete resistant to ingress of water under conditions of atmospheric exposure, which are characterised by short episodes of wetting interspersed with periods of drying. The NSW Roads and Traffic Authority has commissioned research into impregnants, which has resulted in a screening test regime for silanes/siloxanes which assesses them according to fundamental performance properties. These tests have been incorporated into the Australian Paint Approval Scheme (APAS) specification for impregnants. Specifications for impregnation have been developed on the basis of the test results and in line with the APAS document.
