- W830694184 abstract "Different experimental conditions in reticulocytes or their lysates cause the activation of kinases specific for the α-subunit of the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2) with the subsequent inhibition of protein synthesis (for reviews see Revel and Groner 1978; Safer and Anderson 1978; Ochoa and de Haro 1979; Ochoa 1983 and related papers of this volume). With few expections, however, it is difficult to correlate these experimental conditions to those prevailing in the erythroid cell. Considering that the red blood cells due to their functions represent cellular elements particularly exposed to O2 effects, we asked whether a control mechanism of globin synthesis dependent on pO2 exists. The results revealed a reciprocal relationship between the activity of protein synthesis and pO2, and also the activation of an inhibitor of protein synthesis (Almis-Kanigur et al. 1982). Moreover, the high pO2 (hpO2)-mediated inhibition appeared to share common features with other cases of translational inhibition in reticulocytes and, in particular, with the inhibition caused by oxidized glutathione (GSSG). The data presented below indicate that both hpO2 and GSSG can activate a heat-stable inhibitor of ~23000 in reticulocyte lysates." @default.
