- W830766315 abstract "Road rideability, in terms of a measure of surface profile, is becoming a much more significant criterion in assessing the performance of road conditions because of its importance to both road users and construction authorities. Recent international studies into the interaction of road roughness and heavy vehicle suspension systems have demonstrated the importance of rideability to reduce vehicle user costs, and lessening the dynamic wheel forces on roads for increased pavement life. The emergence of new laser technology and other instruments that provide for fast, accurate and low cost methods to measure rideability is now focusing the attention of road authorities to stipulate, in construction and maintenance contracts, the requirement to meet certain rideability values. The purpose of this paper is to emphasise the importance of achieving desired rideability for both road users and road authorities, and to introduce the emerging technologies which will not only measure rideability of completed road works, but also assist during the construction process to achieve the desired quality controls. New technologies provided in instruments such as the Walking Profiler and the Multi-Laser Profilers are described, together with their operation and benefits that these technologies can bring to improve the overall efficiency and lead towards achieving the optimisation of rideability requirements in road construction and maintenance practices.
