ZAKARIA dan NURHENI SRI PALUPI. Cocoa is a rich source of flavonoid antioxidants such as catechin, epicatechin and procyanidin. Many research have shown the potential effects of cocoa for health both in vivo and in vitro. The effects of defatted bulk cocoa drink consumtion on human erythrocyte resistance to oxidation have not been published. The aim of this research was to study the effect of defatted bulk cocoa powder drink consumption on antioxidative properties of human erythrocyte. Healthy women subjects were devided into cocoa group (n=9) and control group (n=9). Cocoa powder drink containing skim milk and sugar was given to the cocoa group everyday for 25 days. The control group received only water containing skim milk and sugar. Both cocoa group and control group signed informed consent and received physical medical check at the beginning and the end of the intervention. Their peripheral blood were withdrawn to analyze erythrocyte antioxidant properties and membrane resistance. Antioxidant property analysis consisted of malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenil-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method. Membrane resistance was analyzed by erythrocyte hemolysis. Data of the cocoa group showed that there were significant decreased of cell MDA from 0,94 ± 0,31 μmol/l to 0,68 ± 0,22 μmol/l (p 0,05), and induced by formaldehyde was not different from 36,77% to 36,19% (p>0,05) . The results of this research revealed that the defatted cocoa powder has potential antioxidant activity in erythrocyte.
