- W83142732 abstract "The reasons an author has escaped attention of serious critics and scholars often reveal more about history of criticism than merits of individual. Such is definitely case with Jean Stafford. Although acclaimed as an excellent novelist and a superb writer of short stories, from publication of her first novel, Boston Adventure (1944), to awarding of Pulitzer Prize for The Collected Short Stories (1970), she has been virtually ignored by critics.1 Such neglect can be attributed to inferior work, to excellent but unimportant work, or to work that does not strike reader as true. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that none of former is case and that Stafford is presenting a new kind of truth, but that, as with work of many women writers, new structures and a new vocabulary are necessary to understand it.2 If protagonist of Stafford's first novel had been a young man, any critic, familiar with psycho-mythological method, would have immediately recognized one of basic archetypical patterns of human experience, myth of hero. However, to offer such a reading for Stafford's novel, it is first necessary to define experience of female psyche, since it is impossible to change Sonia's sex and futile to assume that, whatever is true for male, opposite will be true for female. The best approach would seem to be to accept novel as true and to analyze psycho-mythological patterns against perceptions of one young woman on a journey toward consciousness, with inten? tion not of disproving psychological theory but of developing critical ap? proaches appropriate to study of women writers.3 In The Great Mother: An Analysis of Archetype, Erich Neumann briefly analyzes unique problem of female transformation. Working upon assumption that the woman experiences herself first and foremost as source of life,4 he sketches process: original unity with Great Mother, rape and violent separation by alien male," @default.
