- W831755355 abstract "The stand-structure of near natural, mixedbroad-leaved forest stands in the eastern part of the HainichNationalpark was studied on four plots (a 0.64). The main objectivewas to find out if the actual species richness is a stable state orif beech will regain dominance in the near future. We mapped alltrees > 7cm on the four plots, mapped all seedlings and saplingon 40 sub-plots on each plot and determined the species specificamount of dead wood. Further investigations focused on the canopyspace partitioning and neighbourhood interaction between beech, ash, hornbeam and lime. Therefore a canopy lift was used to getaccess to the uppermost parts of the tree crowns. In order to getinsight into stand history, a dendroecological study was carriedout additionally. The spatial distribution and the species specificabundance of seedlings and saplings turned out not to be correlatedwith the distribution and abundance of conspecific adult trees, indicating a very dynamic state of stand development. Concerningthe neighbourhood-interaction in the canopy, there was nospecies-specific reaction in terms of shoot length-reduction to befound between any species pair. Nevertheless, there was asignificant higher amount of twig-abrasions for hornbeam inneighbourhood to ash. In a multiple regression analysis the mainfactors influencing shoot-growth were determined. The results leadto the conclusion that mechanical interference between neighbouringtrees is a driving force in canopy space partitioning which hasoften been underestimated. The tree-ring analysis showed that beechis most vulnerable towards summer droughts, whereas lime showed nocorrelation between ring-width and precipitation of the concerningvegetation-period. Beech, having the highest mean incrementthroughout the last 50 years, shows a steady decline of ring-widthin the last two decades and has been excelled by ash since 1990.Under the present conditions it seems likely that lime and ash willbe able to compete successfully in stands which are not dominatedby beech now. Hornbeam turns out to be the weakest competitor, having very low rates of increment and hardly any regeneration. Ifbeech can maintain its partial dominance in the stand dependsmainly on the abundance and intensity of summer droughts in thefuture." @default.
