- W83245364 abstract "This chapter discusses the role of hydrogen in cast iron. The presence of hydrogen influences the structure of cast iron considerably. The mechanical and physical properties of cast iron are also affected by hydrogen. “Pinholes” in cast iron are small blowholes below the surface of elements cast into sand moulds. The malleable iron behaved similarly to steel. Its hydrogen content, as determined by desorption at room temperature, increased linearly with increasing charging time and its mechanical characteristics decreased abruptly at first, attaining an almost constant value with greater charging times. Hydrogen exerts a considerable influence on the properties of cast iron, and the hydrogen content of cast iron depends upon the conditions of melting and casting. Owing to the complexity of the whole problem and because of the difficulties encountered in studying it, the knowledge of these effects is inadequate. Little quantitative and reliable data exists concerning these effects, as the difficulties connected with precise determination of hydrogen in specimens at any desired moment and with measurements of their properties are greater than in the case of steel." @default.
