- W83256194 abstract "Cardiovascular disease is, nowadays, one of the major problems that confronts man; this is especially true for people living in organized, stressful, overfed societies. The prime cause of death is occlusive vascular disease affecting coronary vessels in the folk of many western countries and the cerebral vessels in those who live in eastern parts of the world. Contributory factors seem to be such things as stress, hypertension, obesity, and hyper-lipidemia and many of these are clearly interrelated. This chapter discusses the use of primates in cardiovascular research. Primates are new arrivals in the field of vascular research and little work was done with them before the 1950s. Some early experiments were made in 1937 by Goldblatt who used giant macaques to study hypertension. He found the procedure more difficult than in dogs because of the small renal arteries but succeeded in producing hypertension in three out of five animals In 1969, 17,600 New World primates and 50,000 Old World primates were used for various kinds of research purposes. It is significant that only 300 chimpanzees were used for obvious reasons of expense and rarity and fewer are likely to be available in years to come without the efforts of primate centers. There can be little doubt of the desirability of nonhuman primates for cardiovascular research and it is to be hoped that the pioneering efforts to establish centers in the United States will be rapidly extended to Europe and other parts of the world." @default.
