- W83326462 abstract "The aim of the present research was to contribute to both the empirical and theoretical understanding of the cognitive behavioural determinants of caregiver adjustment in caregivers of people with acquired brain injuries (ABI). The primary aims of the research were to: (1) Assess the severity of psychological distress among ABI Caregivers in comparison to other caregivers and the normal population, and also examine the changes in psychological distress over time. (2) Examine the role of biographic, brain injury specific, personality and cognitive behavioural variable, (namely Irrational Schematic Beliefs and Coping) in predicting psychological distress among ABI Caregivers, using both cross sectional and longitudinal models. (3) Examine the mediating relationships according to the integrated cognitive behavioural model where Coping was proposed to be a mediatory of Irrational Schematic Beliefs in predicting distress. Further assessment of the stability of Irrational Schematic Believes and psychological distress over time was also conducted. (4) Replicate the cross sectional and longitudinal models on a comparison caregiver sample to asses the extent to which the ABI Caregiver cognitive behavioural model could be generalised to the broader caregiving context. The research consisted of three studies: Study 1 was a cross sectional examination of psychological distress in ABI Caregivers (n = 239) which investigated the influence of cognitive behavioural predictors. Study 2 was a longitudinal examination of the influence of cognitive behavioural variables as well as stressful life events and neuroticism in predicting ABI Caregiver distress. Study 3 was a comparative study replicating the cognitive behavioural predictor model on (non ABI) Acquired Disability Caregivers (n = 86) both cross sectionally and longitudinally, as well as examining differences between groups of psychological distress and cognitive behavioural predictors. The results of the three studies provided further information about key predictors of ABI Caregiver distress, the applicability of the cognitive behavioural model and differences and similarities between ABI Caregivers and other Acquired Disability Caregivers in terms of levels of psychological distress and the influence of key cognitive and behavioural predictors. Regarding the influence of cognitive behavioural variable in predicting ABI Caregiver distress, consistent with the integrated cognitive behavioural model of distress it was proposed that Irrational Schematic Beliefs and Coping would be significant predictors of distress. A sub question was to explore the stability of Irrational Schematic Beliefs over time. Based on the cognitive behavioural premise that coping reflected the subsequent behavioural responses to Irrational Schematic Beliefs, it was expected that Coping would mediate the relationship between Irrational Schematic beliefs and psychological distress. However, the subsequent analysis did not support a mediated model and post hoc analyses were conducted to detect possible moderated relationships. A longitudinal examination of the cognitive behavioural predictor model controlling for the effect of Time 1 distress, Neuroticism and Stressful Life Events was also undertaken to more thoroughly assess the effects of the cognitive behavioural predictors. Regarding the use of the Comparison group, this group was comprised of caregivers of people with acquired disabilities which were non-neurological, in order to provide a representative comparison group where the effects of ABI specific caregiving issues could be isolated and examined. The Acquired Disability group was also assessed on the extent and severity of psychological distress and the applicability of the ABI Caregiver cross sectional and longitudinal cognitive behavioural predictor models in order to assess the extent to which the models could be generalised. In general there was considerable evidence to suggest ABI Caregivers experience significant levels of psychological distress, much higher than the general population and also higher than other Acquired Disability Caregivers. There was also considerable evidence at a cross sectional level to confirm the presence of direct relationships between Irrational Schematic Beliefs such as Worrying, Problem Avoidance and Need for Approval and psychological distress, and also a direct relationship between Emotion Focused/Avoidance Coping and psychological distress in ABI Caregivers. At the longitudinal level, the Irrational Schematic Belief, Worrying approached significance as a predictor of ABI Caregiver psychological distress after controlling for Neuroticism and Stressful Life Events. However, all the remaining Irrational Schematic Beliefs and Copying variables were not significant predictors. Mediated relationships between irrational Schematic Beliefs and Coping on psychological distress were not supported despite some evidence that Irrational Schematic Beliefs predicted coping. Further post hoc analyses showed some moderated relationships between Irrational Schematic Beliefs and Emotional Focused/Avoidant coping. The integrated cognitive behavioural model of psychological distress in ABI Caregivers was able to be replicated in the Acquired Disability Caregiver and, as such may generalise to the broader caregiving context. The present research has contributed significantly to the field of ABI Caregiver research. This research ahs been the first to: (1) Examine ABI Caregiver distress using an integrated cognitive behavioural framework, and also use previously well established measure of both Irrational Schematic Beliefs and Coping. (2) Examine changes in ABI Caregiver distress over time at both within subject and between subjects levels. (3) Examine the influence of neuroticism in the ABI Caregiver population. (4) Explore the stability of Irrational Schematic Beliefs over time among ABI Caregivers and explore the inter relationship between cognitive (Irrational Schematic Beliers) and behavioural Coping variable in predicting ABI Caregiver psychological distress." @default.
