- W83445739 abstract "It is generally accepted that exposure to ionizing radiation reduces life span. This is true regardless of whether the irradiation has been accomplished externally by neutrons, X-rays, or y-rays, or internally by a-particles or 8-particles. At the present time no one has demonstrated any single physiological change that is peculiarly and uniquely specific for radiation injury. Irradiated animals undergo changes very closely resembling those seen in normally aging individuals. It is uncertain whether the primary causes that bring about these changes are the same. This radiation effect which produces a prematurely old animal is the basis of the widely used descriptive term Accelerated aging is the development in a shorter time period of changes characteristic of the normal aging process. The processes of aging are to be distinguished from age changes. Aging is the summation of the underlying processes of which age changes are the manifestations. To discover the nature of the aging process is far more difficult. The same applies to a comparison of accelerated aging processes with normal aging processes. Both have similar manifestations which are easily observable, but the underlying processes may not be quite so apparent. There are very few experimental data to validate a conclusion that the end product of accelerated aging is essentially the same as normal aging. Casarett (1) is of the opinion that the basic, universal. progressive, deleterious histopathologic manifestations in mammals undergoing accelerated aging and normal aging are qualitatively identical.
