- W834669177 abstract "Without a standardized way to analyze vehicle swept path at roundabouts, engineers are often challenged in verifying if vehicle path simulations would closely match realistic maneuvers. For basic intersections, left and right turning path analyses are typically validated through the use of vehicle turning templates. As maneuvers at roundabouts are more complex in nature, the turning templates are not suitable for evaluating the paths. Vehicle simulation programs are used instead to simulate the maneuver but the accuracy of the adopted path is still highly depended on the engineer’s judgment and manipulation of the software. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of deriving standardized vehicle path for a semi-trailer entering a roundabout given certain roundabout geometry. The methodology involved conducting field tests of a semi-trailer traversing roundabout configurations and studying the travel paths of the vehicle. A total of 69 runs with the semi-trailer in eight single lane roundabouts configurations of three different sizes was captured via GPS transmitters and analyzed. The entry path composition observed was distinct. The average path was found to be comprised of a transition curve (clothoid spiral) and a short tangent section before it circulates the central island. For different roundabout sizes, the observed path composition remained essentially the same. These initial findings showed that an idealized path can be computed based on key roundabout geometry, thus supporting the concept of a standardized approach to determine a vehicle’s entry path at a roundabout.
