In den letzten Jahrzehnten hat die Zahl der Studien kontinuierlich zugenommen, die untersuchen, wie weit Partnerschaften von praktischer Gleichberechtigung entfernt sind und welche Faktoren die Entwicklung egalitärer Muster partnerschaftlicher Arbeitsteilung behindern und blockieren oder sie forcieren. In der nordamerikanischen Forschungstradition sind in den siebziger und achtziger Jahren zu diesem Zwecke vier verschiedene Ansätze entwickelt worden: New Home Economics, Time-Availability-Ansatz, Ressourcentheorie und Geschlechtsrollenansatz. Mit dem Doing-Gender-Ansatz ist Ende der achtziger Jahre ein Ansatz aufgetaucht, der die MainStream-Forschung zur familialen Arbeitsteilung grundsätzlich in Frage stellt. Bis weit in die achtziger Jahre hinein hatte sich die Forschung fast ausschließlich auf die innerfamiliale Arbeitsteilung bei Ehepaaren beschränkt. Erst seit Beginn der neunziger Jahre wird der Arbeitsteilung in nontraditionalen Familien- und Lebensformen, wird vor allem dem Vergleich von Nichtehelichen Lebensgemeinschaften und Ehen mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt." @default.
