- W835402309 abstract "This chapter discusses consciousness and unconsciousness. Consciousness is a state of awareness in which the subject is capable of perception of self and environment. Consciousness may be considered as the state of activity in the brain that enables it to exert any of its functions as mind. The cerebral cortex is responsible for the content of consciousness but must be damaged severely and diffusely before producing loss of consciousness. In contrast, a modest degree of damage to the midline structures of the thalamus and midbrain will produce impairment or loss of consciousness. The rostral part of the reticular formation is essential for the maintenance of the conscious state. The cells of the reticular formation resemble motor neurons in appearance and are scattered throughout the brainstem, enmeshed in fibers whose net-like pattern is responsible for the designation reticular. Consciousness is impaired by failure of the reticular activating system or by the diffuse disorder of the cerebral cortex. The localized lesions of the cerebral hemispheres do not cause loss of consciousness unless the reticular formation is involved directly by the pathological process or indirectly by means of edema, ischemia, or compression." @default.
