- W836048181 abstract "Catalysts fitted to new vehicles with spark-ignition engines control harmful emissions very efficiently, as soon as they have reached operating temperature. However, during a cold start, the catalyst is at first inactive, just when emissions are highest, mainly because of the fuel-rich mixtures used for reliable starting and good driveability. Experiments using a reference gasoline fuel, especially at low temperatures, have shown that mixture enrichment raises the emission of unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). This paper describes some research by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) on how to reduce or eliminate this mixture enrichment while maintaining start quality. The research focused on the starting process and first 60s of operation, and found that this objective could be met by using a very volatile single-component liquid fuel. Significant reductions in HC and CO could be achieved, but nitrogen oxides (NOx) increased. Researchers will next study whether a method can be found to introduce such a fuel to the engine, for the early stages of starting and warm-up period until the catalyst operates. A modern 1.8l four-valve spark-ignition engine was used. The paper discusses the reference fuel selection, details the test results, and includes charts of start temperature effects." @default.
