- W837119785 abstract "Wisely, Andrew C. Arthur Schnitzler and Twentieth-Century Criticism. Rochester, NY: Camden House, 2004. 201 pp. $75.00 hardcover. As a volume in the Literary Criticism in Perspective series, Andrew Wisely's book would seem to need no statement of purpose at its outset. However, after a biographical sketch that provides details about Schnitzler's family background and the women around him as he matured, Wisely states that [he wants] to describe the criticism and the reasons behind its judgments (16). Rather than focusing on specific watershed moments, his aim is to highlight currents and constellations of Schnitzler criticism over the last hundred years (16). In doing so, Wisely breaks up the volume into specific thematic groupings, arranged chronologically. The section on Schnitzler's critical reception in the press focuses on the feuilletons of Viennese newspapers and the cultural journals of Berlin. Wisely points out that many of Schnitzler's critics made art out of their criticism, [cultivating] a personal style at the expense of thoroughgoing analysis of the text (42). In his estimation, this early criticism reflected personal biases (one critic asserting that he could write as well as Schnitzler if he too had a doctor's practice to support him), rather than objective, scientific approach to literary analysis (42). The latter was to be found, according to Wisely, in early monographs, such as those by Reik (1913), Korner (1921) and Blume (1936) (48). Wisely focuses on the differences between these authors' approaches to Schnitzler. He views Reik as a pure psychoanalyst, noting that Schnitzler found his criticism thorough and mostly accurate (49). Wisely suggests, on the other hand, that !Corner's belief in expressionism as the most transcendental form of literature motivated his criticism of Schnitzler's naturalistic writing (58). Wisely sees Blume's focus on nihilistic aspects in Schnitzler's work as a product of the climate of National Socialism and what he viewed as the failure of liberal values in its wake (68). Moving chronologically to the renaissance of Schnitzler scholarship after the fallow period of the Nazi blacklist era, Wisely examines scholars who went beyond the stereotypical early focus on decadent and licentious sexuality and focused on Schnitzler's societal critiques. These critics saw Schnitzler as an ethicist intent on exposing both the bourgeois hypocrisy towards the lower classes and the self-deception festering in his impressionistic characters (72). …" @default.
