- W837737698 abstract "The preparations leading up to August 22, 1998, when CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads took over Conrail required one of the largest and most challenging railroad upgrades since World War II. CSX Corporation had just 15 months to lay 125 mi (201 km) of new track, including 220 turnouts; repair or replace 25 bridges; install a signal system complete with 132 new signal houses along 270 mi (434 km); and rehabilitate 130 public crossings and three train yards. Time, logistics, material delivery, and labor negotiations were all challenges to completing the project in time for the acquisition, but the biggest challenge of all was safety. Construction had to be completed while 30-40 daily trains passed just 14 ft (4 m) away. Keeping the project on track took communication, including weekly calls and monthly no risk meetings to discuss issues openly as partners. Meanwhile, other upgrades were also needed. Conrail double-tracked 50 mi (80 km) of its line, and CSX workers upgraded other areas. The new owner rushed to complete about half of the acquisition's $480 million in capital improvements by September 1, 1998." @default.
