- W838509829 abstract "Most citizens perceive congestion and pollution as one of the greatest problems we all face today. However, they rarely see themselves as part of the problem let alone part of the solution. They are, however, concerned that children and the elderly are most affected by the adverse impacts of traffic and congestion, such as delays, accidents, respiratory related illness, fear, road rage, etc. The promotion of sustainable mobility has great potential to ease congestion and pollution, thus to improve health, both individually and collectively. It is now well established the relationship between physical activities and good health. The missing link is health as a marketing tool to promote mobility/demand management initiatives. Apart from the health and environmental benefits studies suggest that governments could save millions of public funds in the health sector if more people made more use of 'active transport' and used their car less. The impacts would be fewer cars in our roads, and a reduced space spent on roads and parking (e.g. loss of habitat), a cleaner air to breathe and a healthier environment to live in. This paper will explore the health benefits through physical activity as a bridge to promote non-motorized modes of transport such as walking and cycling as viable alternatives to the car within urban congested areas. It will also present the story of an ex-car driver who gave his car up a year ago and now cycles over 30 miles a day reinforcing the health benefits through the regular practice of 'active transport'." @default.
