In initial experiments, drops were nebulized from various water sources, charged using a corona device, evaporated by mixing with dry air, and then evaluated using a modified NCAR ice nucleus counter to obtain the EIN fraction as a function of temperature. Subsequent laboratory studies on EIN using cloud water formed on natural CCN and collected during research flights can potentially provide answers to the long-standing question of how ice crystals can readily initiate as cumulus clouds developed through the freezing level." @default.
