- W839001048 abstract "The author discusses recent developments in concrete pavements and expresses the opinion, that most motorists are primarily concerned with the quality of ride but that other factors, such as colour, are of less importance to them. Particular reference is made to recent noise legislation which has counteracted recent progress towards providing a good ride, good high skid-resistance, good water dispersal and economy. Special mention is made of plastic grooving and of the Cement and Concrete Association's new hardened concrete texturing device which puts random grooves in hard concrete; this finish is likely to prove more expensive than plastic grooving and may produce the same noise. After comparing the noise requirements for concrete pavements with the noise generated by asphalt, the author discusses the need for an absolute measure of ride quality and states that the present tests (tolerance about absolute level and rolling, straight-edge) are far from adequate and even the multi-wheel profilometer does not indicate where and why the ride feels bad. The author expresses the view that existing pavers can give good surfaces when operated by top quality operatives provided the base is strong. It is suggested that a specification for an in-situ CBR of 12-15% minimum below the sub-base and of 30% for the sub-base would help to solve the problems; that the specification should aim at getting high daily outputs during the longer days and good weather." @default.
