- W83989761 abstract "Perchlorate is an anion with a chemical structure of ClO4−. It has been used as an oxidizer in rocket propellant, explosives, road flares, and air bags. It is stable in the environment, and exposure can occur through its ingestion in food or water following industrial contamination or from naturally occurring perchlorate. Numerous drinking water sources, including several large ones in the southwest United States, have been contaminated. Perchlorate has been found in human breast milk and certain foods. In a recent study, perchlorate was found in the urine of all 2820 subjects tested. The primary health effect is inhibition of iodine uptake in the thyroid where iodine is required for thyroid hormone production. The fetus and young children need thyroid hormone for normal neurodevelopment, and thus could be particularly susceptible. At high doses, perchlorate has been shown to cause decreased thyroid hormone production and hypothyroidism. Several studies have failed to identify clear effects of low environmental perchlorate exposure on thyroid function. However, a recent large study has reported an association between low perchlorate exposure and decreased thyroid hormone in women with low iodine intake. Further research is needed on the impacts of low perchlorate exposure in potentially susceptible groups." @default.
