- W84005362 abstract "This chapter discusses the immunosuppression and immunological tolerance in carp. Immunological memory, immunosuppression, and immunological tolerance are all facets of two opposing control mechanisms in immune responses, namely, helper and suppressor cells. Helper cells were first demonstrated in fish by means of the hapten-carrier effect. More recently, attention has been drawn to the question of whether suppressor cells exist in fish. Experiments conducted on rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) using T-dependent and T-independent carriers have demonstrated a marked difference in the responses to the two groups. In an experiment described in the chapter, immunological memory was quite marked when some fish were injected with the T-dependent carrier, Keyhole Limpet haemocyanin (KLH). Memory was slight or nonexistent when the carrier was the T-independent polysaccharide Ficoll. This may demonstrate the heterogeneity of fish lymphocytes and their division into T-like and B-like subpopulations." @default.
