- W842191656 abstract "The following hypothetical human resource problem has, like so many of its ilk, no correct answer. In order to help your colleagues deal with such a situation, please write and tell us how you would handle it. We'll print as many as space permits.--The Editor. Horton was delighted. Hubbard, manager of mechanical engineering research for the XYZ Corporation, had just offered him a chance to get his master's degree in mechanical engineering at company expense ! Mike had explained, turned in an excellent performance in the years you've been with us and it's probably easier to develop some of our own technical talent than to recruit engineers with advanced degrees. We'd like to give you a year's paid leave to attend State University and get a master's. We'll continue your salary and pay your tuition. Living expenses will be up to you. Complete your degree successfully and we'll work out a challenging assignment for you when you return. Think it over, talk to your wife and give me your answer in a week or so. Mike made no mention of a safety valve in case the university program did not work out for Ed. Ed, 27 years old, had joined XYZ six years before, upon graduation from State University. He had always intended to go back for a master's degree, but with a wife and three young children he had just not been able to take the necessary year or so off. Even attempts to pick up a course or two at a university extension center had not been possible because of the demands of his work schedule and his family commitments. this offer from Mike certainly looked like a great opportunity to boost his career. A Word of Warning Later, at lunch, Ed related his good fortune to some of his fellow researchers. Joe Bowen, a senior researcher who had been around XYZ forever, dampened Ed's enthusiasm when he commented, So, the interest in continuing education is 'on' again--Ed, this company has blown hot and cold about continuing education for years. Each time the economy improves it seems that management gives somebody the opportunity to get some more education! Then, when times get tough, the program dies. If I were you, I'd check out what happened to some of the others who were put in this program and see how they made out. And it doesn't sound to me like you've got a guarantee of a job when you're done, either! Was this merely sour grapes on Joe's part or was the continuing education offer really not the prize it seemed? Ed decided to check further before he made a final decision. Over the next few days, Ed talked to people and checked company files. He could identify five individuals who had been granted, over the past several years, the same opportunity he was considering. To help him decide, he put together the following summary of their experiences. Jack T.: Couldn't keep up with the course work, particularly the math and computer courses. Dropped out of the university and resigned from XYZ. Dean D.: Completed degree program and returned to XYZ in the same position he had held before attending the university. Has had no promotion or been given additional responsibility since his return. Told Ed he had acquired skills at the university that the company was not using. Feels very frustrated and has been circulating resumes looking for a more challenging position. Roger C.: Successfully completed the master's program with a brilliant record. Recruited and given an attractive offer, while at the university, by a head hunter. Felt XYZ was indefinite about his post-university assignment and accepted the other company's offer. …" @default.
