- W84328796 abstract "This chapter presents some of the major findings on the effects of acidic deposition on surface water and ground water chemistry, sediment chemistry, and aquatic biota. Acid deposition has had a significant impact on poorly buffered, soft-water lakes and streams in Europe and North America. In addition to the decrease in pH, metals—leached from the soils and sediments or deposited into the precipitation—have increased in concentration in the water column. Some of these metals are toxic to aquatic biota, and others are accumulated by aquatic biota. They can then enter the human food chain, either through drinking water or consuming fish. Acidification affects plants and animals and is refleeted by a decrease in species diversity beginning at around pH 5.5. Changes in biomass, productivity, and decomposition are less sensitive parameters and are not noticed until the pH drops below 5.0. In acidified lakes, there tends to be a shift from planktonic to benthic production with occasional nuisance growths of mosses and filamentous algae. Fish might be scarce or absent in these waters. Many lakes and rivers have been changed by acidic deposition. If further degradation of aquatic ecosystems has to be prevented and acidified lakes have to be recovered, a program of reduced acidic emission is necessary. Until such a program can be legislated, liming of selected lakes and streams, combined with fish stocking and fish breeding programs, might provide an interim solution." @default.
