- W844752103 abstract "This paper begins with some general considerations, first reminding the reader of the specifity of the Greek notions of historia and bios, before scrutinizing what four ancient authors tell us about the ἀναγραϕὴ τῶν βίων — the phrase appears in Polybius X, 21, Diodorus X 12, Philo, De praemiis 2 and, last, in Plutarch, Tim. 15, who insists as a biographer on the ἔμϕασις ἤθους. It then focuses on Plutarch and highlights the major importance of personal relationship established as well between hero and reader as between biographer and “biographed”. The (modern) notion of “active reading” has recently been used in Plutarchean studies, especially for the Table Talks : it also applies to the Lives, but the ancient practise of the “Spiritual Exercises” may well prove to be more illuminating. Keeping company with glorious heroes, perceiving them as friends and guests, and observing them at once admiringly and sympathetically, Plutarch endeavours to capture and describe the uniqueness of each factual experience. Lastly, an example of the complexity of Plutarch’s biographical writing is given with a study of the rather enigmatic narration of Caesar’s murder." @default.
