- W84565231 abstract "The title is a bit of a misnomer as the book is more of a text, spanning 600 pages. The book lists 40 contributors and, as is not uncommon with multi-author books, the writing styles form less of a cohesive whole when compared to other recent books on similar topics such as Randi Hagerman’s ‘Neurodevelopmental Disorders’ and Daniel Siegel’s ‘The Developing Mind.’ The core of writers come from Utah state in the USA, but there are contributions from experts such as Elizabeth M. Dykens, Neuropsychiatric Unit, University of California, Fred Volkmar, Yale Child Study Centre and Randi Hagerman, University of Colorado. The rather cursory Introduction by editors Sam Goldstein (from University of Utah) and Cecil R. Reynolds (from Texas A&M University) does not do proper justice to the wealth of content in this three part book.Part I Basic Principles and Applications. This is in some ways the most rewarding section of the book as it sets an appropriate intellectual frame for the latter two parts. It includes meaty chapters entitled, ‘Neuropsychological Assessment in Genetically Linked Neurodevelopmental Disorders,’ ‘Neurobehavioral Disorders and Medical Genetics’ and ‘Neuroimaging and Genetic Disorders.’Part II Disorders Primarily Affecting Learning and Behavior. This includes chapters on conditions such as Learning Disabilities, ADHD and Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome. The chapter on Learning Disabilities ranges from experimental models of prenatal neural development to the practical use of neuropsychological assessment instruments.Part III Disorders With Broader Spectrum Effects. This includes 13 chapters each devoted to a different syndrome. The list includes more common syndromes such as Fragile X, Turner, and Down to less common syndromes: Lesh-Nyhan, Williams and Prader—Willi. The detail in these chapters is more than enough for the average Child Psychiatrist and offers a marvellous reference source. Overall this is a fine textbook and, despite it’s lack of literary cohesiveness, should be an important addition to the active library of any child psychiatrist interested in either genetic disorders or neurodevelopmental disorders, or both! One major quibble, it was a pity that the neurodevelopmental legacy of prenatal Alcohol, Cocaine or Nicotine were not acknowledged in a collective chapter. Finally, the book includes a quote, which many would dispute, from Matt Ridley, author of The Red Queen. However, this quote seems more relevant the further you enter into the book’s text. ‘Human beings are individuals...just as genes are the only things that replicate, so individuals, not societies are the vehicles for genes…every individual is a specialist of some sort, whether he or she is a welder, a housewife, a playwright or a prostitute. In behavior, as in appearance every human individual is unique.’" @default.
