- W845707103 abstract "A mathematical model for the simulation of the injectionmoulding of thermosetting elastomers has been developed. Themodel uses suitably reduced forms of the fundamental equationsof continuity, momentum and energy as a basis, with aconstitutive equation to describe how the elastomer viscosityvaries with local flow conditions. A cure model is used tocalculate cure levels during the injection phase, and the timetaken for the final moulded component to reach a specifiedminimum cure level during the subsequent cure cycle.Moulds are defined by splitting the various elastomer flowpathsinto a network of end to end connected geometric entities ofsimple cross section, for instance circular, rectangular andannular.The moulds elements are discretised using a finite differencemesh and the equations which comprise the model are cast into asuitable finite difference form for solution. Solution of thecontinuity and momentum equations involves numericalintegration using the trapezoidal rule and the energy equation issolved using a fully implicit Crank Nicholson method, since thisgives unconditional stability. The model also allows for a wallslip boundary condition.The flow model has been experimentally validated by simulatingan extrusion rheometer and comparing predicted capillarypressure drops with measured ones. It has also been validated bycomparing real injection moulding pressure drops withcorresponding predictions. The cure simulation has been validated by comparing predictedcure times with measured cure times taken during the injectionmoulding trials.The effect of the variation of material properties, heat transfercoefficient and finite difference mesh geometric parameters onsimulated results have been assessed.The effect of wall slip on simulated injection results has beeninvestigated." @default.
