The objective of the study was to describe how to use SQ3R strategy in improving the second semester students' reading comprehension of Islamic Elementary Teacher Education ( PGMI) . Based on the problem found in preliminary study that students got difficulty to identify the unfamiliar words, explicit main idea and supporting details, identify the explicit information. Then SQ3R applied to overcome the problems. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review. The method of the research is Classroom Action Research (CAR) study involves the students of the second semester of Teacher Education for Islamic Elementary School ( PGMI ) in reading comprehension that consisted 22 students. The criteria of success was students could achieve gain equal or more to 15 point of 70% of all students. The result of the study noted that reading comprehension test in cycle I, the students' score who achieved the gain was 31.81%. While in cycle II the students' score who achieved the gain was 86.36%. Then the researcher determined to stop the cycle. Since the result met the criteria of success. The result of implementing the SQ3R strategy, in survey step; students can identify the unfamiliar words. Students can identify explicit information in question steps; in reading, recite and review steps students can identify explicit main idea and supporting details. From the steps it can be concluded that the strategy of SQ3R is very effective for teaching reading comprehension in tertiary level of second semester students at Islamic Studies Elementary Teacher Education ( PGMI ) if it follows several procedures: (1) activate student's background knowledge before reading, (2) providing some pictures or real objects as the instructional media, (3) finding the meaning of the unfamiliar words, (4) formulating list of questions as the prediction, (5)reading the introductory and concluding paragraph, (6) answering the previously formulated questions, (7) keeping the information in the long term memory, (8) recalling the keeping information, (9) presenting reports by using own sentences, (10) doing verification about the report by reading the text, (11) writing the verification result. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan implementasi strategi SQ3R untuk meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan Bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Pendidikan Guru Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (PGMI) semester II di STAI Diponegoro Tulungagung. Berdasarkan latar belakang permasalahan yaitu ditemukan bahwa mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam mengidentifikasi kata-kata yang belum dikenal, mencari ide pokok dan kalimat pendukung, mencari informasi yang sudah disebutkan dalam teks. Kemudian strategi SQ3R diterapkan untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut. SQ3R kepanjangan dari Survey (survei), Question (bertanya), Read (membaca), Recite (menelaah), and Review (reviu). Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas yang melibatkan mahasiswa semester II jurusan Pendidikan Guru Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (PGMI) mengenai pemahaman bacaan Bahasa Inggris yang terdiri dari 22 orang. Kriteria keberhasilan dalam penelitian ini yaitu mahasiswa mampu mencapai standar sama dengan atau lebih dari 15 poin dari 70% keseluruhan jumlah mahasiswa. Dari hasil penelitian dapat dijelaskan bahwa tes membaca di siklus I skor mahasiswa yang mencapai standar adalah 31.81%. Sedangkan di siklus II mahasiswa yang berhasil mencapai standar adalah 86.36%. Kemudian peneliti memutuskan untuk menghentikan siklus penelitian karena sudah memenuhi kriteria keberhasilan. Sedangkan hasil penelitian tindakan dari strategi SQ3R, di tahap survey mahasiswa mampu mengidentifikasi kata-kata sulit. Mahasiswa juga mampu mencari informasi tersurat di tahap bertanya; pada tahap membaca, menelaah dan reviu, mahasiswa mampu mencari ide pokok kalimat dan kalimat pendukungnya. Dari tahapan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa strategi SQ3R adalah strategi yang sangat efektif pada pengajaran pemahaman bacaan Bahasa Inggris untuk tingkat mahasiswa semester II jurusan jika mengikuti prosedur berikut ini: (1) sebelum membaca, guru mengaktifkan pengetahuan peserta didik yang dimiliki, (2) lalu guru menyediakan gambar atau objek benda nyata sebagai media pembelajaran, (3) para mahasiswa menemukan kata-kata yang belum dikenal, (4) mahasiswa membuat pertanyaan prediksi, (5) mereka membaca paragraf pendahuluan dan paragraf kesimpulan, (6) mereka mencjawa pertanyaan prediksi yang dibuat sebelumnya, (7) mahasiswa menyimpan informasi dalam memori lama, (8) selanjutnya mereka mengingat kembali informasi yang tersimpan, (9) lalu mempresentasikan laporan dengan menggunakan kata-kata mereka sendiri, (10) kemudian mereka melakukan ferifikasi laporan dengan membaca bacaan yang disediakn, (11) terakhir, mereka menulis hasil ferifikasi.
