- W84661570 abstract "There are six major issues that arise from Butler and Hamnett's (1994)nanalysis of gentrification in London which are considered to be the indices ofngentrification: (1) the presence of a particular group of middle class workers, nparticularly those who work in professional and administrative occupations in innerncity locations; (2) these middle class workers are highly educated; (3) they arenmore likely to have academic credentials or qualifications in the fields of the arts, nhumanities, and social sciences than in science and technology, business andnaccounting, and law; (4) gender is a significant issue in gentrification, with a strongnpresence of middle class women, particularly those who work in professional andnadministrative occupations; (5) the marked presence of dual-income families; andn(6) the consumption of gentrified owner occupied housing by the middle classes.nThis thesis examines these six issues in relation to the 17 inner suburbs of BrisbanenCity for the late 1980s and early 1990s. The data on inner Brisbane in 1991 shownthat gentrification occurs in certain suburbs in inner Brisbane rather than in allnsuburbs, with the marked presence of the expert middle classes, particularly thosenwho work in professional, and managerial and administrative occupations. Thendata on inner Brisbane also show that there are strong correlations between thoseninner suburbs considered as gentrified (i.e. marked by the strong presence ofnprofessionals, and managers and administrators) and the suburbs marked by thenstrong presence of highly educated people; those qualified in the arts, humanities, nand social sciences; and female experts, i.e. professionals, and managers andnadministrators; but only weakly correlated with suburbs marked by strong presencenof dual-income families, and there is no correlation with suburbs having high levels of home-ownership. Thus, the first four issues considered as indices ofngentrification by Butler and Hamnett are shown in the inner suburbs of Brisbanenclassified as gentrified but not dual-income families, and the high level of ownernoccupied housing consumption. The marked presence and growth of the expertnmiddle classes, particularly professionals, and managers and administrators in innernBrisbane, are arguably due to consumption opportunities available within or nearntheir place of residence.n" @default.
