- W84773772 abstract "This chapter explains the transport mechanisms by which contraction activating extracellular Ca2+ ions enter smooth muscle cells. The sources of Ca2+ ions activating contraction in smooth muscle have been intensively investigated. The analysis of the results of this investigation shows that during stimulation of smooth muscle in different ways both the extracellular and intracellular media may be the source of Ca2+ ions. The question of the transmembrane entry of extracellular ions into smooth muscle cells under the influence of different stimulations deserves particular attention, as under conditions close to natural and in some model experiments the increase in intracellular concentration of ions is mainly a result of calcium influx. The removal of Ca2+ ions from the bath solution, or the action of different blockers completely or to a considerable extent suppress contractions induced in smooth muscle by different drugs. It appears that phasic and tonic contractions have different sensitivities to various blockers. This fact has led to suggestion of phasic and tonic systems for the activation of contraction in smooth muscle." @default.
