- W848202386 abstract "This work is concerned with the analysis ofindustrial energy use for the purposes of reducing thatuse to a minimum within the constraints imposed by theexisting plant. The work is divided into two parts.Firstly, a general analysis of the energy usedin an industrial plant is made for the year 1986. Basedon monthly records of energy consumption andenvironmental parameters, it is primarily intended toheighten management awareness of energy flows and therelative contributions from each energy type towardsthe total annual consumption and cost. It is performedusing a suite of interactive linked computer programsand the data is reduced to a graphical form forpresentation in a report. The analysis is a firstapproximation, assuming steady state conditions withmany parameters time and space averaged, but isjustified by the findings that monetary savingsapproaching 5% of the annual energy bill could be madewith changes to operational procedures alone. As a result of this work, it was revealed thatthe boiler-house supplying the majority of the plantwith high pressure hot water for process and spaceheating requirements used more than half of the totalannual energy requirements and that potential energysavings were likely.Secondly, a detailed analysis of the energy usedby the boiler-house is- carried out. A real timemonitoring and targeting system which records anddisplays boiler, environmental and plant parameters isdeveloped and installed. Data gathered over a period ofsix months enables (i) specific cases of energy wastageresulting from operational procedures to be identifiedand (ii) trends of performance indicating poor energyefficiency to be traced. The system developed may beused to provide the information necessary to enableimproved control.A general result which may be inferred from thiswork would be that the combined approaches of a topdowngeneral analysis and a bottom-up detailed analysisof energy use can provide significant opportunities forenergy conservation resulting solely from the improvedoperation of large energy consuming plant. The work was performed at a major manufacturingplant in the U. K. with an annual energy consumption ofthe order of 600 gigawatt-hours and an annual energybill of the order of E10 million." @default.
