- W848744256 abstract "It is known that active particles induce emerging patterns asa result of their dynamic interactions, giving rise to amazingcollective motions, such as swarming or clustering. Here we presenta systematic numerical study of self-propelling particles; our maingoal is to characterize the collective behavior of suspensions ofactive particles as a result of the competition among their propulsionactivity and the intensity of an attractive pair potential. Activeparticles are modeled using the squirmer model. Due to itshydrodynamic nature, we are able to classify the squirmer swimmeractivity in terms of the stress it generates (referred to as pullers orpushers). We show that these active stresses play a central role inthe emergence of collective motion. We have found thathydrodynamics drive the coherent swimming between swimmerswhile the swimmer direct interactions, modeled by a Lennard-Jonespotential, contributes to the swimmers’ cohesion. This competitiongives rise to two different regimes where giant density fluctuations(GDF) emerge. These two regimes are differentiated by thesuspension alignment; one regime has GDF in aligned suspensionswhereas the other regime has GDF of suspensions with an isotropicorientated state. All the simulated squirmer suspensions shown in thisstudy were characterized by a thorough analysis of global propertiesof the squirmer suspensions as well as a complementary clusteranalysis." @default.
