- W849516059 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes the chemical synthesis of three types of sialyl glycopolymers that differ by the length and hydrophobicity of the spacer arm introduced between the sialic acid residues and the polyacrylamide backbone. Some of these glycopolymers have been successfully used as inhibitors of viral hemagglutinins. For the synthesis of glycopolymers, the α -sialoside monomers and acrylamide are dissolved in deoxygenated water obtained by multiple freeze-thaw cycles, bubbling with nitrogen. Alternatively, water can be deaerated by simply boiling it vigorously over a flame for 10–15 minutes followed by bubbling a steady stream of nitrogen through it via a fritted glass filter rod as it cools. Bubbling with helium or argon offers no distinct advantage. The reaction mixtures are checked by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) for residual α -sialoside monomers. The α -sialoside content within the polymers can be determined by the resorcinol method and by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR) spectroscopy. The extent of sialoside incorporation within the copolymers is highly dependent on the quality of the starting materials. Allyl α -sialosides tend to give much lower yields, and the content of sialyl residue is hardly predictable. In contrast, N -acrylamido-terminated sialosides give highly predictable sugar content." @default.
