- W84958401 abstract "Respiratory Sincytial Virus is the most important cause of lower respiratory tract infection in children younger than two years old. Acute viral bronchiolitis is the most relevant clinical manifestation of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus infection, with a high morbidity in the acute phase and long-term respiratory problems, especially, recurrent wheezing. The aims of this study are to determine the incidence rate of recurrent wheezing after Respiratory Syncytial Virus bronchiolitis in children below 12 months of age, attending Emergency Rooms and to explore the putative associations with different risk factors. The statistical analysis was performed using a generalized linear model, under the Poisson distribution and linked with a logarithmic function.Seventy six children were followed during two years and a half. The median age was a month and a half; 58% were boys; in 68% of the cases there was a person with acute respiratory infection in the family; 91% of the mothers did not smoke during pregnancy and in 35.5% of the cases there were a passive smoker in the family. Parents schooling had an average of eight years of attendance; there were five household members and three personssharing the patient bedroom, in average. Sixty-two percent of the patients were hospitalized in the acute phase of the bronchiolitis. The crude and adjusted incidence rates of recurrent wheezing were 3.7 and 3.6 episodes child-year respectively. Different risk factors for recurrent wheezing were assessed, including age, gender, hospitalized treatment during bronchiolitis, parental history of asthma and atopy. In the multivariate analysis only gender and parental history of asthma were independently associated to recurrent wheezing. The incidence rate of postbronchiolitis recurrent wheezing was 37% higher among female (versus male) babies and41% higher in children with a parental history of asthma. Conclusion: This is the first Brazilian study and the third among developing nations addressing this question, evidencing the great concern related to respiratory morbidity in children after Respiratory Syncitial Virus bronchiolitis." @default.
