- W85028515 abstract "This chapter describes the structure and function of ascending sensory tracts. The sensations of pain, temperature, and touch are fed into the body from the environment by numerous receptors and nerve endings in the skin. Other sensations regarding position, vibration, discrimination of shape, size, and texture, and accurate localization of touch are picked up by receptors called proprioceptors in the muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments. These two groups of sensation are carried by different sensory nerve pathways. Those carrying pain, temperature, and touch from the receptors in the skin enter the spinal cord through the posterior nerve root, cross over, and synapse in the cord and then travel laterally up the opposite side until they reach the thalamus where there is another synapse. The final group of nerve fibers travels to the posterior central gyrus of the cortex through the internal capsule. Nerve fibers carrying information from the proprioceptors also enter the spinal cord through the posterior root ganglion, but travel posteriorly up the same side of the cord on which they enter crossing over to the other side of the cord in the medulla oblongata where they synapse." @default.
