- W851570792 abstract "Chemical measurements made in the intact brain are essential for the understanding of chemical means of communication between neurons. The key problem in this endeavor is the sampling of the extracellular environment of the brain without destroying the tissue. To circumvent this problem, various elegant perfusion techniques have been developed and have provided much useful information. In the last decade, several investigators have turned their attention to the use of small voltammetric probes directly inserted into the brain of an anesthetized or freely moving animal. These electrodes provide a measure of the chemical composition of extracellular fluid by the current that flows from the oxidation or reduction of species at the electrode surface. Thus the in vivo electrochemical technique differs greatly from perfusion techniques since the sample is not actually removed from the brain." @default.
