- W85184541 abstract "This chapter discusses peptides that differ considerably in the qualitative and quantitative occurrence and sequence of their constituent amino acids, different shapes, molecular weights, and charges of the molecules express these differences. The value of the charge is strongly dependent on the medium in which the peptide occurs, and these effects are reflected in different electro–migration properties. The resulting charge of a peptide depends on the degree of dissociation of individual ionogenic groups in the amino acid residues of the peptide chain. The effective charge of peptides may be changed distinctly by appropriate selection of the pH of the medium. For the separation of peptide mixtures, three basic electromigration methods may be used, which permit complete resolution of ionogenic substances in solution, viz., zone electrophoresis (ZE), isoelectric focusing (IF) and isotachophoresis (ITP), or a combination of these. An important criterion for the selection of the electro–migration method and of the carrier medium is the method of detection." @default.
