- W852173888 abstract "This paper discusses the application of simulation techniques to model the individual characteristics and driving behaviour of many thousands of road vehicles, as they travel around a congested road network. It aims to review one approach to microscopic traffic modelling, where each vehicle in a road network is modelled. This approach is implemented by the PARAMICS simulation software, which is a wide-area system and includes dynamic routeing of individual vehicles. PARAMICS uses general vehicle movement algorithms, and applies three types of gap acceptance procedure, depending on whether traffic is merging, changing lane, or crossing or joining a priority stream. PARAMICS is being used in a pilot project, being conducted in Edinburgh, Scotland, to model the traffic flow effects of bus priority schemes within some of the city's arterial corridors, known as 'Greenways', which combine strictly enforced traffic management measures with bus priority and traffic calming. A Greenways model is being developed, to anticipate and evaluate congestion arising from a variety of traffic control and car parking strategies. The paper identifies eight PARAMICS features that are especially important in representing bus priority measures.
