- W85386784 abstract "Realism is a philosophy of science that, in its many varieties, seeks to provide adequate justification for believing that (1) the commonsense, everyday world we experience is more or less how the world really is and (2) our understanding of this world has improved across the millennia and can be expected to continue to improve, both with regard to the structures in our world (e.g., subatomic particles, as well as social structures) and the processes (e.g., underlying causal mechanisms). While most social and behavioral scientists are realists in this sense, it has proven difficult for philosophers to explicate coherent realist philosophies that can withstand criticism. As a result, there have been dozens of variants of realism proposed over the past two centuries, with the changes over time instructive for the future of realist philosophies and the implications for conducting productive social and behavioral research. One development in recent decades has been greater understanding of how humans make sense of the world, informing what has been called ‘naturalized epistemology’ with an explosion of cognitive and neuroscience knowledge. This, in turn, has resulted in some realist philosophers revisiting American pragmatism and promoting revised pragmatist theories that offer clearer support for social and behavioral sciences." @default.
