- W853998032 abstract "In order to evaluate differences between theories and actual phenomena taken place in the field, it is most appropriate to compare results collected from some instances of real failures to the results of theoretical analysis. Generally geotechnical engineers make an effort to collect data through trial embankments or instances of failures in a systematic manner around the world and also in the eastern Asia. However, in Korea, trial embankments have been constructed only to control settlement in Young-Jong Island and Kwang-Yang Bay. The status of studies associated with the mechanism of failures is insufficient. On the contrary, it is not so easy to collect data from actual failures of embankments because of social trends to pursue engineers' responsibilities of failures. A policy to permit engineers to collect data for the future utilization is desired. In the process of performing investigations regarding to the cause of embankment failures, the lackness of data from actual failures of embankment limited the extension of the investigation. A measure control system for the construction control of embankment on the soft ground, EMMS (Embankment Monitoring System) has been developed in the study. The system developed in the study is run under a MS-Windows environment. Soil characteristics of downstream area of Nakdong river was established through analyzing data collected during the construction of embankment on the soft ground in the area. Results from the analysis of field measurement using the EMMS were compared to the results of finite element analysis to prove the validity of applying existing theories associated with the stability of embankment to the domestic construction fields." @default.
