- W85577547 abstract "This thesis investigates part-time employed women’s perceptions of time pressure. Part-time employment is a common strategy used by Australian women to balance work and family time demands. Among OECD nations, Australia ranks second after the Netherlands in high rates of part-time employment. However, there has been only limited research on the extent to which part-time employment affects experiences of time pressure for women. The thesis research design assesses part-time employed women’s perceptions of time pressure compared to other groups of women including those who are employed full time and those not in the labour force. This is arguably a unique approach that strengthens previous research on part-time employment. This thesis builds substantially on previous Australian time pressure research by examining three dimensions of time pressure, including overall time pressure, time pressure at home and time pressure at work. The study uses a mixed methods approach. The quantitative analyses, based on data collected in 2006 for the Negotiating the Life Course project, examines time pressure satisfaction in relation to employment hours and job quality. These results show that satisfaction with time pressure varies by gender, hours of employment, job characteristics and work context. The home emerges as an important site of time pressure for women and not all types of part-time employment alleviate women’s experiences of time pressure. The qualitative component of the study, based on in-depth interviews with 22 women in South East Queensland, finds that women use a number of strategies to manage time pressure including reducing employment hours, seeking flexible jobs, being organised, multi-tasking, and calling on spouses to provide support. Women’s accounts suggest that ‘hands-on’ support from spouses tend to provide only minimal time pressure relief, as husbands were ‘helpers’ rather than ‘initiators’ of housework and childcare tasks. Women describe how time pressure negatively affects their mental and physical health and wellbeing. The thesis concludes that time pressure is linked to the time women spend on paid and unpaid tasks, and also the qualitative experience of juggling multiple time demands and the temporalities of the home and work contexts. The thesis contributes to work-family conflict theory by showing that low satisfaction with time pressure occurs when time demands and strains exceed women’s resources and supports. Further, time pressure is experienced differently across context with variations in how time is experienced at home and at work. This thesis finds part-time employment is a constrained choice that women make in order to cope with these multiple and conflicting time demands and in response to limited state and spousal support with housework and childcare. Overall, the thesis challenges previous assumptions that part-time employment is a homogenous, equitable and efficacious form of paid work." @default.
